The French are ready to leave the battlefield.
The French troops are to leave Afghanistan at a similar timetable as the Americans. President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the decision to pull out at least 4000 troops from the theater of war. This will in turn pave way for other allied forces to leave soon. The French President’s announcement came just after US President Barack Obama’s decision to begin calling troops back home.
According to President Obama the troop withdrawals will take place in two phases. Half will go home this summer and the rest will arrive in the US by the end of the year. Germany and Britain too likewise plan to withdraw several troops. Though Osama Bin Laden is dead the Taliban remain at large. However, Afghan security has improved and thereby lessened the impact of the Taliban.
There is a sense of progress in Afghanistan as time’s river flows onwards. The homecoming of French troops is a sign that now the Afghans can finally become autonomous.
