Iranian media said: An Iranian-Canadian journalists Hossein Derakhshan who is well known for his blogging has been sentenced to 19-and-a-half years in prison.
According to Mashregh News, on Tuesday, Derakhshan was convicted of propaganda against the Islamic Republic, collaborating with hostile governments, committing blasphemy and managing an obscene website.
Fars News Agency reportedly also said that Derakhshan can appeal. On Wednesday morning, Derakhshan’s personal blog, Hoder.com, was not accessible.
The Canadian government said Derakhshan’s sentencing is “unacceptable and unjustifiable”.
Lawrence Cannon, the foreign affairs minister, said “No one should be punished anywhere for simply exercising one’s inherent right to freedom of expression,” . “Iran must release him”.
