The issue of women driving cars is being looked into.
Saudi Arabia is one of the few places in the world where women are not allowed to drive. But that may be about to change. The Speaker of the Shoura Council Abdullah Al-Asheikh said that the Shoura was ready to rationally discuss the problem. This came after a number of individuals including businessmen and women, writers, intellectuals, media personnel, housewives and students sent a letter to the Shoura asking for this leniency in the law.
Female driving is a fiercely debated conundrum in the desert kingdom. Recently, Manal Al-Sharif was detained for a period of ten days for openly driving on the roads of Al-Khobar. The judgment lies in the hands of the Shoura Council. If they want to act in accordance with the wishes of so many Saudi women they ought to allow female driving.
