On Thursday, in a residential area of Srinagar, soldiers shot dead two militants during a gunbattle. For months Srinagar has been under regular curfews.
Indian troops and counter-insurgency police surrounded a house where the alleged militants were in hiding early in the morning in the suburbs of the city.
Ashiq Hussain Bukhari, the Srinagar police chief told reporters “We have killed two militants who were hiding in two houses”.
“The fighting has stopped but the search operation is still on in the area as we suspect the presence of third militant.”
At least hundred civilians trapped in the residential district were evacuated during several hours of gunfire for safety. Two policemen and a woman got injured.
