Thursday, 14 Oct, 2010: Mike Mullen the US Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral said that the Pakistani military has pledged to go after militants that the US wants targeted in the North Waziristan tribal region.
Mullen said General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff has given surenesses that he will mount an offensive in the tribal region of Pakistan along the border of Afghanistan.
Mullen reportedly said in an interview on “Conversations with Judy Woodruff”, a programme on Bloomberg Television, which is to be broadcast this weekend: “He has committed to me to go into North Waziristan and to root out these terrorists as well”.
“He clearly knows what our priorities are…North Waziristan is the epicentre of terrorism,” Mullen said.
“It’s where al-Qaeda lives.”
He further said that the aim was to defeat al-Qaeda and assure Afghanistan would not once again become a haven for the group.
