The Malaysian Opposition Leader is in hot water.
Anwar Ibrahim, the head of the opposition coalition party in Malaysia has been summoned to court on allegations of sodomy. This is a crime which could land him in jail for 20 years. Sodomy is an act that is illegal in Malaysia, which has a population that contains a majority of Muslims. Anwar previously spent 6 years behind bars for the same crime from 1998 to 2004. However, this time it looks like luck is not on his side.
The judge after examining the prima facie evidence consisting of witness testimony and DNA profiling declared that the trial must proceed. Anwar, who is 63 years old, has been charged with sodomizing a former aide. The harm this alleged act of his has caused his party, the PJP (People Justice Party), is immense.
According to Anwar Ibrahim, this has been done to discredit him and his party.
In fact, he is hardly surprised at the verdict delivered by the judge. Najib Razak’s government, which is currently in office, might gain an advantage by calling elections ahead of time. Anwar Ibrahim’s party was gaining ground as Najib’s ruling party (the Barisan Nasional Party) had not been living up to its promises.
With this twist in circumstances, the PJP appears to be the obvious loser.
